These actors shed their daily caloric intake and go through rigorous workouts to obtain certain physical transformations, and in turn, accurately portray a character in a film.

1. Chris Hemsworth

The "Thor" star shocked fans in 2015 when he shared a photo of himself after he had gone through an intense 500-calorie a day diet ahead of his film, "In the Heart of the Sea".

2. 50 Cent

In "All Things Fall Apart," 50 Cent played a cancer patient as a tribute to a friend who died of the disease.

For the role, the rapper dropped from 214 pounds to 160 in nine weeks after liquid dieting and running on a treadmill three hours a day.

3. Matthew McConaughey

In 2013, McConaughey lost 40lbs to play the role of an HIV-positive man in "Dallas Buyers Club."

His role in the movie earned him his first ever Academy Award.

4. Christian Bale

Bale is no stranger to losing or gaining weight for the art. In 2004, he lost 70lbs, weighing just 120lbs for his character in "The Machinist."

For "The Machinist," Bale's daily diet consisted of consuming vitamins, running, and eating an apple and can of tuna a day.

In 2005, Bale regained100 lbs of muscle to play the DC superhero Batman. He lost the weight again for his role in "The Fighter" in 2010.

5. Michael  Fassbender

Fassbender went from 160 pounds to 127 pounds for the 2008 film "Hunger," which chronicled the imprisonment of Bobby Sands, a real-life IRA prisoner who participated in the hunger strike in 1981.

6. Natalie Portman

To get into character as a ballerina in the psychological thriller, "Black Swan," Portman lost 20 pounds and practiced up to 16 hours a day.

7. Tom Hanks

In 1992, Hanks gained 30 pounds for the role of Jimmy Dugan in "A League of Their Own." And In 1993, he lost 26 pounds to play AIDS-stricken Andrew Beckett.

Hanks has lost and gained weight for several roles, but losing 55 pounds for 2000's "Cast Away" remains the most extreme.
