Just the other day, a newly married friend of mine made the ground-breaking discovery that there are no good men in Lagos. Her theory – the truly eligible bachelors are folks who have Ibadan as their roots. That is, they were either born/raised in Ibadan and relocated to Lagos at some point in search of greener pastures.

To help put this in perspective, her definition of a “good, eligible bachelor with the refined tastes of a gentleman” is simply a guy who'd NEVER cheat, a guy who'd hold open doors for a lady and who'd be sophisticated enough to appreciate art, music and theatre. A good guy, basically.
I thought about it – hard, for all of 60 seconds before I finally came up with a name which she quickly shot down, claiming that said person had infact spent a good part of his life outside Lagos. I couldn't believe it, surely I know a few good Lagos men! I thought. As it turned out, I did infact know a few, good men but only barely so.
It's not uncommon to find ladies bemoan the seeming lack of available good men these days. As a matter of fact, word on the dating street is all the good men have been taken. Well I beg to disagree, and I certainly do not agree that there are no good men in Lagos or of Lagos origin.
