Why aren't more of our stars dating?

Nigerian celebrities are so low key when they are dating. Everything is hush hush unlike their American counterparts.

This isn't a Harvard University verified statistic but I am pretty sure that an average celebrity in the United States would have been in a romantic relationship with another celebrity before settling down.

Think about your favourite American celebrity and he or she would have been in a few publicized romantic relationships. In not too far away South Africa, rappers AKA and Cassper Nyovest have been in high profile relationships with media girls. These relationships were extensively covered by the South African media too.

In Nigeria, the only celebrity relationships are the ones that usually make it to the altar. As for the celebrity relationships that don't make it to marriage? Well, we don't know about those because we hardly see Nigerian celebs just dating and calling it splitsville after that.

Justin Bieber has been with Selena Gomez. Drake is dating Rihanna (and once dated Serena Williams). MeekMill is going out with Nicki Minaj, and Ariane Grande is with Mac Miller. Let's the flip to another side of the coin.

Which Nigerian singer is Wizkid dating? Which female celebrity is Davido seeing? Phyno? Falz? Which female celebrities are they dating?

You see where I am getting at. It's like our top celebs don't mix in the dating pool.

I have lost count the number times I have asked a Nigerian celebrity if he/she was dating another celeb. The answer most times is a mix of denial and evasive tactics. Like what's the big deal in saying you are dating this person?

I can tell you that a lot of celebs date each other, but for reasons best known to them they prefer to keep quiet about it than a stroll down the red carpet together.

Privacy in the Nigerian context is different than what prevails in the American celebrity society. Drake and Rihanna are in a 'private relationship' but yet they have been seen together on numerous occasions and gushed about each other public. As long as the inner details of their relationship are not out to the public then it is private in the American context.

In the Nigerian context, a relationship is public when a news site or publication reports that two celebs are dating. Just like finances, Nigerian celebrities treat the matter of love and relationship very private (well except for Ice Prince and a few others). Nigerian celebs are very 'coded' about their love lives.

Also, another reason why we don't see a lot of celebrity flings and relationships is because of the lack of paparazzi in the country. We don't have photographers who stake Davido and Wizkid for a greater part of the day to see who they are hanging with.

A high number of celebrity relationships were exposed or made public by the paparazzi in America. In Nigeria, we don't have that culture of a photographer stalking a celebrity till he has a photo of who he is dating. Without this set-up, who knows who is dating who.
