Jimmy Carter may have escaped cancer but failed to prevent his grandson from death.

The former US President's grandson, Jeremy Carter, died just days before Christmas while taking a nap after claiming he didn't feel well.

The 91-year-old politician revealed the sad news while teaching a Sunday school class in Plains just hours after the 28-year-old unexpectedly passed away on Sunday, December 20.

On Saturday afternoon, December 19, the otherwise healthy Jeremy told his mom he wasn’t feeling well and then went to lay down for a little while. When his mother returned to check on him, she realized his heart had stopped, reports CNN.

Maranatha Baptist Church Rev. Jeremy Shoulta told the outlet that the family desperately tried to revive Jeremy with CPR before he was rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, doctors were unable to keep him alive and Jeremy slipped away in the early morning hours of Sunday.

President Carter was brave enough to teach his Sunday school class as always, even after his grandson’s passing. However, he was visibly “shaken” and “obviously sad,” claims the reverend.

This tragic news comes just weeks after the former president revealed he was cancer free on December 7. Jimmy had a brush with death himself when he found out his cancer had spread to his brain in August 2015, which is when he started rigorous radiation treatment.
