His management confirmed the news that he died Sunday, April 24, 2016 the same day as the Congolese king of Rhumba Rock, Papa Wemba.
Billy whose career spanned about 6 decades continued to perform live until his illness, having lined up a number of appearances at the time of his death and loved to cover 'Purple Rain' by legendary Prince who died at age 57 last Thursday.
A statement on the chart-topper’s website reads:
“We regret to announce with a heavy heart that Billy has passed away today in his home after a serious medical condition. We would like to extend our most sincere condolences to his wife Blanche and family for their loss as they and the world grieves the loss of another musical icon that helped pioneer today’s R&B music."
The R&B pioneer is survived by his wife Blanche and their two children.
