DLC officials deny culpability in 10 students' collapse
Authorities at the University of Ibadan (UI) have denied claims that their poor planning caused the collapse of 10 Distance Learning Centre (DLC) students on Sunday.
Student Pulse gathered that the students who collapsed were among the batches of students waiting to sit for the GES 101 examination at the Adebayo Akande hall.
They were rushed to the university's Health Centre, Jaja Clinic.
Protesting students had assaulted the DLC officials after their colleagues collapsed, alleging that poor arrangement was responsible for the incident.
But, according to an Olisa TV report, the director of the DLC, Professor Bayo Okunade, said the students who defied the official schedule caused the incident.
“Students were supposed to come in batches," Okunade said.
"We batched them and they were each supposed to come in at a specific time, instead, all of them came virtually the same time and they wanted to get access when it was not even their turn.
"One of the students that collapsed was to write his exam at two o’clock, he found himself at that situation at 12 o’clock.
"He came earlier than necessary."
Okunade noted that arrangements have been put in place to prevent a reoccurrence.
The university recently had to revamp its medical setup after a 200 level student of the institution, Mayowa Alaran, slumped and died while watching a UEFA Champions League match between Barcelona and Bayern Munich on the 6th of May.
