VC commends UNILAG students for their conducts during NASU strike

Ogundipe said UNILAG students showed great understanding as they refused to protest during the NASU strike.

Ogundipe commended the students while during an interview on Sunday, March 18, 2018.

The non-teaching staff unions announced their nationwide strike on Monday, December 4, 2017, to protest the sharing formula of the N23 billion released by the government as part of earned allowance of workers of federal universities across the country.

After three months, the unions, Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAATs) all of which are under the aegis of Joint Action Committee has on Wednesday, March 14, announced the immediate suspension of the strike.

However, looking back at the strike and the students' conduct, Ogundipe that it was good to see things coming back to normal on campus.

“We cannot deny the fact that the strike affected the smooth running of the system.

“It was not easy doing without their services, but above all, I commend the students for the way they handled the situation, while it lasted.

“These students refused to yield to pressure to involve in any form of protest or disruption of peace and stability on campus as a result of the offshoot of the strike in several regards.

“They showed great understanding and cooperated with the management through the harsh period,’’ he said.

Ogundipe also said the university management would be happy as things would start moving the way they should be.

VC apologized to students during the strike

Recall that on Thursday, February 8, 2018, Pulse reported the blackout issue in UNILAG as students complained and blamed the non academic staff of university in UNILAG for the lack of water and power in their hostels.

However, in a bid to calm the situation, the  Vice Chancellor moved from one hostel to the other appealing to the students to bear with the school management over blackouts in all halls of residencies.
