28-yr-old ex-cop jailed 60 days for sex with teenage student

A 28-year-old former Darke County policeman has been convicted and sentenced for having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student.

Bryan D. Wombolt was on Monday sentenced to 60 days behind bars and 60 months of probation by Judge James Stevenson of Shelby County, following his January conviction on two-count charge of Unlawful Sexual Conduct with minor, felonies of the third degree.

Judge Stevenson told Wombolt that his age and that of victim were considered in his sentencing.

“The court takes into consideration the age of the victim being nearly 18-years-old and you being a young age yourself,” Judge Stevenson said..

“The court looks at being tagged as a sex offender as a form of punishment in itself."

Prosecuting Attorney, Kelly Ormsby, had wanted a longer sentence of up to three years.

“When we send our kids off to school we have a right to expect them to be safe and protected. Mr. Wombolt chose to forget the responsibility as a uniformed officer at the high school and pursue a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student," Ormsby had said before the sentencing.

Wombolt apologized for his crime.

“I am sorry for what I have done,” he said.

“I have hurt the community and I apologize for what has happened.”

Apart from his jail time and probation, Wombolt will be registered as a Tier II sex offender for the next 25 years.

He could also spend up to five years in prison if he violates the terms of his probation.
