Rapist jailed 35 years for gang-rape of 17-yr-old student

Chukwu Ebuka Sunday, believed be a rape-gang kingpin, has been sentenced to 35 years in jail. He was found guilty of participating in the rape of a 17-year-old student in 2012.

A 35-year-old rape-gang kingpin, Chukwu Ebuka Sunday, has been handed a 35-year jail sentence by an Asaba High Court for the 2012 gang rape of a 17 year old secondary school student.

Sunday, alongside five other suspects sill on the run, were found guilty of  the three count charge of conspiracy to commit rape, rape and demanding with menace.

The crime was committed on November 23, 2012, at Akwuebulu, within the Asaba judicial division, Asaba, Delta state.

In her statement, the victim told the court that she was running an errand for the mother when she was attacked.

“My mother sent me on an errand to the market to buy foodstuff for her.

"On my way to the market, along Arthur Richard Street, Akwebulu, one boy called Ebuka saw me and seized me by my skirt.

"He dragged me into their compound and locked the gate."

She said the suspected hit her in the stomach with a cutlass and boasted that "he was a strong man and a cultist."

"Thereafter, he pushed me into his room, forcefully removed my underwear and raped me."

Her assalant was not satisfied with just raping her, inviting his friends to participate in the crime.

“After raping me, he called his friends on phone. Five other boys came later and also raped me in turns.

"They poured alcoholic gin drink on my face, broke raw eggs on my head and beat me up even as I was crying.”

Sunday denied the charges but Justice Nduka Obi held that the prosecution had established its case.

“The evidence of PW1 was straight forward and to the point as she gave her evidence without any form of malice and with a disposition of forgiveness,” he said.

Just Obi then sentenced the accused to three years for count one, 30 years for count two, and two years for count three.

Sunday will have to serve the full 35-years term because his sentence had no option of fine.
