£50,000 Worth Rhodes Scholarship Returns To Nigeria

A 15-year campaign led by a Rhode Scholar has brought the £50,000 per annum worth Rhodes scholarship back to Nigeria

Nigerians will once again be considered for the world's most prestigious scholarship, the Rhodes Scholarship, thanks to the Managing Director of Afrinvest and a Rhodes Scholar, Ike Chioke.

Valued at between £40,000 to £50,000 per annum, the Rhodes scholarship is awarded to two exceptional students to study at the prestigious Oxford University, United Kingdom.

Announcing the re-introduction of the scholarship at the 3rd Business Forum of the Oxbridge (Oxford & Cambridge) Club of Nigeria, in Abuja, Chief Executive Officer of The Rhodes Trust and Warden of Rhodes House in Oxford, Mr. Charles Conn said the Rhodes Scholarship covers all university and college fees.

“Depending on the course of study, the total value of the scholarship could range from £40,000 to £50,000 per annum, with the average tenure for a Rhodes Scholar being 2.8 years and 3 – 4 years for PhD courses," Conn said.

In addition, Rhodes scholars receive a monthly maintenance stipend to cover accommodation and living expenses which include health insurance and travel.

Ike Chioke, was instrumental to the 15-year campaign for the reinstatement of the Nigerian award after the long exclusion.

A total of 14 Nigerians became Rhodes scholars from 1962–1992.

The Rhodes Scholarship, named after Cecil John Rhodes, is an international postgraduate award for selected foreign students to study at the University of Oxford.

A class of 83 Scholars is selected each year from 30 countries for the prestigious 111-year-old scholarship.
