Protests hit UNILAG over death of electrocuted first class student

Students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have taken to the streets of the institution in protest over the death of Oluchi Anekwe, a 300-level Accounting student who died on Tuesday.

Students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have taken to the streets of the institution in protest over the death of Oluchi Anekwe, a 300-level Accounting student who died on Tuesday.

Anekwe was electrocuted to death when a live high tension fell on her UNILAG's Sodeinde Residence in the late hours of Tuesday as she made her way to her room.

Reports say she was rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Following her death, students took began a peaceful protest that is quick heating up in the school and on the social media where the #RipOluchi and#UnilagProtest tags are becoming viral.

The students want the Vice Chancellor, Professor Rahman Bello, and the management to take responsibility for Anekwe's death

Tweets from students participating in the protest suggest that they blame the management for the tragedy.

Some tweets suggest that there are fears of a recurrence of the tragedy given that there are other dangerous wires lying around in the institution.

Even the President of the UNILAG Students Union (ULSU), Abiodun Martins, in a memo issued after Anekwe's death, suggested that the tragedy could have been averted.

"The event that led to her death is in its entirety avoidable," he wrote.

"We hereby call on all concerned authorities to swing into action so as to prevent future occurrence."

The UNILAG command of the Man O' war Nigeria has also issued a statements following the incidence.
