OAU asks students to stay indoors as Oro cult holds rites today

Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, have been asked to remain indoors as the Oro cult hold rites for the Ooni of Ife, Alayeluwa Oba Okunade Sijuwade.

The management of the institution in a Tuesday evening circular advised students against going out throughout the duration of the curfew reportedly imposed by the head of Oro cult in Ife, from 9am to 4pm today, 12th of August 2015.

“This is to inform the generality of students that there shall be a curfew in Ile-Ife on Wednesday, August, 12, 2015 from 9.00a.m. to 4.00 p.m. and from 11p.m. till dawn," the circular read in part.

“Students are therefore strongly advised to stay on campus and those off-campus to remain indoors.

“The division of student affairs counts on the maturity and sense of responsibility of great Ife students and appeals to all students to comply with this information and continue to keep the peace.”

The curfew was imposed to allow the Oro deity perform traditional rtites required for the departed monarch.

There has been counter reports that the curfew is a rumor but most residents of the ancient city have elected to stay indoors.

Oba Sijuwade became the fiftieth traditional ruler of Ife in 1980.
