NCWD DG unveils vocational training, scholarships for IDPs
The National Centre for Women Development (NCWD) has unveiled plans to organize vocational trainings and scholarships for internally displaced persons (IDP).
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, the Director-General of the centre, Onyeka Onwenu, said the programme will start with IDPs living in the Federal Capital Territory in the second week of September.
“On the 8th of September, we are actually taking our programme to the IDP camps," Onwenu told Daily Trust.
"We are starting with the ones in Abuja."
She said the centre the centre chose to train the IDPs because that is the only way to make them self-sufficient.
“Our experience has taught us that when you train a woman to be able to help herself, you’ve trained a family and you’ve trained a community.
"If we are able to train them and give them a skill that they can put to immediate use, they will help themselves and help their families."
The Director-General explained that the trainees will also be given start-up capitals.
"So what we are doing with them is not just to train them but to give them a little something as well so that they can actually start their businesses.”
She added that the centre will offer scholarships as well as psychosocial support.
