Varsity gets new VC

In a release by the registrar of the university, he replaces Prof Bamitale Omole whose tenure will expire on June 23, 2016.

The Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University(OAU) has appointed Prof Ayobami Salami as the new Vice Chancellor.

The decision was reached at a meeting yesterday.

Ayobami is a Professor of State Application and Environmental Studies.

In March, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non Academic Staff Union at the institution, warned the school management against acting on its plan to impose a Vice Chancellor of their choosing for the institution.

This was after it was alleged that alleged that the university management is working towards imposing a candidate because it probably has something to hide.

The university management had also been asked to probe the outgoing VC but the school students took a stand as a show of support for Omole.

“The call for the arrest and probe of Prof Omole shows desperation for vendetta among the faceless people, who do not like developments brought about by the outgoing VC. Their argument is not only shallow; it is laughable, baseless and lacks merit, " the Student Leaders’ Alliance of Nigeria stated.
