Nassarawa corps members protest non-payment of 'allawee'
Nassarawa State Governor had promised the corps members a monthly allowance of N5,000 during their orientation programs.
The 2016/2017 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1 corps members who started the protest in the early hours of Monday took their agitation to the Government House, Lafia, the state capital.
Nassarawa State Governor, Umaru Tanko Al-makura had promised the corps members a monthly allowance of N5,000 during their orientation programs to support the welfare of the youth.
But the corp members reportedly said they didn't receive the payment for 11 months of their service in the state.
According to Punch, the list containing the names of the corp members was allegedly submitted by NYSC to the state Ministry of Education and onward submission to the Ministry of Finance, but the education ministry rejected list.
Explaining the why the Ministry of Education rejected the list anonymous source who spoke to Punch said the list was rejected because workers were on strike and after the strike action, the Ministry rejected it again leaving the corps members unpaid.
Supporting the source claims, the NYSC coordinator in Nassarawa state, Mrs Zainab Isah said the corps members should blame the commissioner of education, Mr. Aliyu Tijani assuring the youths that the NYSC management had sent the list.
Responding to the state coordinator's accusations, Tijani said the NYSC management did not send the list on time adding that the ministry had already paid all corps members whose names were officially submitted to the ministry of education.
Nassarawa NYSC was recently plagued with unpalatable incidents.
In October, two corp members, Oguntola Babatunde and Danjuma Salihu serving in Nassarawa state reportedly drowned in Assakio river in the state.
The Coordinator of the National Youths Service Corp in the state, Hajiya Zainab Isah confirmed the death of the corp members to newsmen on Monday, October 9.
Days after a female corps member, Nwankpa Blessing was kidnapped in the state.
However, following the announcement of her release by the management of the National Youth Service Corps, Nwakpa was offered the opportunity to redeploy but she chose to remain in Nassarawa till she finishes her one year program.
