Board undergoing changes to suit demands of educational sector

The News Agency Of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the board is working hand in hand with the Federal government to achieve this dream.

Oloyede made this known in a statement issued by the board's Media and Information Head, Dr Fabian Benjamin, on Sunday, October 13 in Lagos state.

He asserted that the changes would be possible with the ongoing reforms in the establishment.

“The Prof. Is-haq Oloyede-led management of JAMB has resolved to ensure that the change agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari government concerning education is actualised in no distant time.

“This will be made possible through major reforms currently going on in the board.

“I want to insist that the board will continue to make reforms that will carry the interest of every Nigerian child irrespective of status or class,’’ the statement quotes.

In the statement, Oloyede also expressed concern that most of the national policies currently in place were aimed at accommodating the interests of the well to do without any considerations for the downtrodden.

“In view of the above, the board restates that one of such reforms it carried out recently was the cancellation of the use of scratch cards as part of its examination process.

“We shall continue to evolve and come up with innovations that will take us to the next level.

“We must continue to think and come up with new ways of doing things in the 21st century.

“This will ensure that our services are easily accessible as well as discourage fraudulent or sharp practices associated with some of the examination processes so as to conform to global best practices."

Oloyede also admitted that after a critical look at the process of regularising candidates by the board, a lot of lapses have been uncovered.

The statement said that the board would not stand by and do nothing about the trend, as it strives to effect positive change which would enhance the fortune of tertiary education in Nigeria, NAN reports.

According to the statement, JAMB has designed a template which will be complete on-line by candidates and endorsed by the Vice-Chancellors, Rectors, Provosts or Registrars of the candidates’ institutions of choice.

The templates would then be submitted to the board's offices close to the various institutions, for the approval of the registrar which would be subject to available evidence.

It went on to read, “The Registrar may deny approval if sufficient and convincing reasons are not given.’’

The statement also urged the public to realise that the admissions were done by the academic board of tertiary institutions which, from now on, would be submitted to the board ensuring that admissions must meet set requirements by proprietors of the institutions and government criteria.

It emphasised that there was no basis for any regularisation, saying that the process was only designed by the board to clear the backlog as it has decided to seize regularisation exercises.

The statement went on to encourage the public to reflect critically on the development for the board to take action which would be good for the country's education sector as well as the future of the Nigerian child.
