No fewer than 80% of corps members posted to schools, says Coordinator

The Coordinator of National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) in Sokoto State, Mr Thomas Yamma, said more than 80 per cent of the 2,371 corps members deployed to the state were posted to schools to teach.

The corps members were under the 2015 Batch "B’’, Stream One of the national service, posted to schools to teach as part of their primary assignment.

The News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) reports that Yamma made the disclosure at Wamakko, headquarters of Wamakko Local Government Area of Sokoto State during the closing ceremony of the three-week orientation exercise for corps members.

The coordinator said "majority of the corps members deployed to Sokoto State were specifically posted to secondary schools across the 23 local government areas of the state to teach.

Yamma said a significant number of the corps members were deployed to other key sectors to help in the provision of badly-needed social infrastructure to the people of the state.

He urged the corps members to respect the culture and religion of their host communities, "and keep off any acts capable of soiling the image of the scheme.’’

The coordinator commended the state government and the Sultanate council of Sokoto for their sustained support to the NYSC scheme.

The state Governor, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Bashir Garba, described the scheme as one of the veritable tools for national unity and development.

Tambuwal warned Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and other employers of labour in the state against rejecting any corps members posted to them.

He said "Sokoto State is one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria and there has never been any attack on corps members in the history of the state since 1976 when it was created.’’

The Chairman of the NYSC Governing Board in the state, Alhaji Abubakar Sahabi, assured the corps members that the state government and the management of the scheme had made adequate arrangements for their safety and comfort.
