17-yr-old Nigerian student drowns while swimming in Lake

A a 17-year-old Nigerian student at the Wallington County Grammar School in South London, Jamal Ottun, has drowned while swimming in a Lake in Vancouver Island, Canada.

A Nigerian student based in the UK, Jamal Ottun, has drowned while swimming in a Lake in Vancouver Island, Canada.

Ottun, a 17-year-old student at the Wallington County Grammar School in South London, drowned in the Shawnigan lake while swimming with his schoolmates.

According to a statement by the school, he was in Canada with it’s Rugby team for a tour when the tragic incident happened.

“It is with great sadness that we now confirm that during a scheduled swimming trip on Sunday, July 12, 2015, whilst on the School rugby tour to Canada, Jamal Ottun, an extremely popular and talented Year 12 student, required support from the emergency services," the statement read.

"Despite their response, and the considerable efforts of the school’s own staff and students, Jamal could not be saved and sadly passed away at the scene.”
