FG to provide milk for millions of students

Federal Government is determined to tackle the case of malnutrition in the country. The case of unhealthy eating will result in low intelligent quotient of children.

Schools provided with free milk

Worried about the state of malnutrition of Nigerian students, The Federal Government has made plans to provide a litre of milk a day to over 30,000,000 children in secondary and primary schools under the school feeding programme.

According to UNESCO investigations, 24 per cent of Nigerian children under the age of five are under weight while 37 per cent are malnourished.

Vanguard reports that the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, disclosed that the Federal Government is determined to tackle the case of malnutrition in the country. The case of unhealthy eating, he said, will result in low intelligent quotient of children.

In a meeting in with West African Milk Company (WAMCO) in Abuja, Ogbeh also disclosed that next year, the government will embark on a programme to develop massive grazing grounds for cattle to improve the quality of beef and milk in Nigeria, while also making things a little more comfortable for cattle rearers.

He also explained that his ministry will acquire 10 deep water rigs from the Borno State Government and build windmills to operate wells that will provide water for the planned grazing grounds.

Responding, Managing Director of the company, Mr. Rahul Colaco, explained that WAMCO, producer of Peak milk brand which has been in operation in Nigeria for about 60 years, was committed to creating the most professional and attractive dairy production in the country.
