Pupils stay at home, schools remain shut as Fayose fights off APC lawmakers

Schools in Ekiti are closed as parents keep their wards home while governor Fayose fights off 19 APC lawmakers plotting his impeachment. There are fears of crisis as commercial transport workers vow to prevent an ouster with the last drop of their blood.

Governor Ayodele Fayose

Pupils in Ekiti state have remained at home while primary and secondary schools, both private and public, remain shut as the power tussle between Governor Ayo Fayose and the 19 All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers continues.

The State House of Assembly remained locked even as members of the commercial motorcycle riders association and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) gathered to prevent the planned impeachment of the governor Fayose.

Parents have kept their wards at home, obviously afraid that the political tension may lead to crisis.

As a result, schools which were supposed to resume for the third terms remained closed while the few that opened eventually sent pupils back home.

A parent who spoke with Vanguard, Tony Ajayi, said he decided to keep his kids at home following a text message from the management of the private school they attend, indicating a shift in the resumption date.

With the 19 lawmakers failing to show up, fears outbreak of violence remain.

The commercial transport workers have vowed to prevent Fayose's ouster with the last drop of their blood.

NURTW Chairman, Clement Adekola, said they are resolute in their bid to prevent the lawmakers from causing chaos in the state.

"Our mission here is to prevent the APC lawmakers from causing crisis in our state," he said.

"We all voted for Fayose on June 21, 2014 during the governorship election, and we shall do everything to protect the mandate freely given to the governor, even if it involves sleeping here every day."

While the political crisis goes on, students will most likely remain at home.
