“Nigerian research institutions have failed" — KWASU VC
Nigeria's research institutions have 'failed' to help the country develop, says Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’Allah, the Vice Chancellor of the Kwara State University.
Na’Allah made the assertion last Thursday at the first Collaborative Research Initiatives Conference (CRIC) where he delivered a lecture on the theme, “To Search is to Find: Building Research Capacity in Nigerian Universities and other Research Institutions”.
"Nigerian research institutions have failed this nation," he said.
According to him, academics are not aware that the “university system is not a civil service job" and therefore show lackadaisical attitude to research.
"As a researcher, you must constantly move around the world to meet people and collaborate with them in the areas of relevant researches.
"An academic should be a man of ideas who goes around attending conferences.”
He cited the case of Malaysia as an ideal example of research leading to development.
"I just returned from Malaysia a few days ago and what I saw baffled me.
“I visited only a university there and the talk of the town there was the theme of the vision of that country for year 2020.
"It was the talk of the whole university community in Malaysia that the country must be industrialised by 2020.”
The Vice Chancellor then promised to turn KWASU into a research base for the benefit of Nigeria and the entire African region.
