Lecturers may begin another industrial action tomorrow

There are indications that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may embark on another industrial action tomorrow, Wednesday, November 1.

The union in September called off its one month strike after reaching an agreement with the Federal Government that their demands would be implemented before the end of October.

Today is the last day in October and the Federal Government is yet to honour the agreement it had with the Union since September.

Meanwhile, the president of the Union, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi while announcing the conditional suspension of the recent industrial action had said the union was suspending the strike to allow government commence implementation of the agreement between them.

"I don’t think the Federal Government wants ASUU to go on another strike but if this situation extends beyond the October 31 deadline, then ASUU will very likely go on strike again," Ogunyemi said.

An anonymous lecturer who spoke with the Nation about the impending strike said the union is warming up for another industrial action has government has not addressed their demands.

He said, “the government has not done anything. We have not heard from them and it is just one week to the end of the October deadline. I can assure you that we are warming up and there is the possibility that from November 1, we will resume the suspended action.

"They (government) told our leaders during negotiations that they have prepared everything for the implementation. They were even brandishing some papers, especially on the earned Academic Allowance. But we have not seen anything nor heard from them.

Prior to the suspension of the last industrial action, the Federal Government had in August held in Abuja on Saturday, August 26 implored the Union to call off the strike and promised to fulfill the agreement.

If by the end of today, there is no talks between the Federal Government and the Union, another ASUU strike may begin tomorrow.
