This professional ice skater is world’s first international Hijabi
Lari is the first woman to compete in international ice skating competitions while wearing the hijab.
She is also the first woman from a Persian Gulf state to be both of these things, according to Mvslim.
Lari has accomplished these feats at the young age of 22.
Ice skating origin story
This young woman’s incredible story began in faraway United Arab Emirates, where she was born.
Her love for ice skating began when she was just 12 years old after she saw a Disney movie called ‘Ice Princess.’
From that moment, her passion was born and she was determined to do anything and everything including waking up at 04:30 in the morning and practicing before school.
Despite her determination, Lari’s father initially refused to give his consent because of his conservative Muslim beliefs and culture.
This prevented her from joining skating competitions during her teenage years. Eventually, she got his permission and she is now her biggest fan.
From struggle to success
Over the years, Lari has managed to overcome many challenges including finding ways to maintain her modesty while showcasing her Islamic faith as she performs incredible routines.
Now, she has succeeded in breaking barriers across the board by representing her country at the Winter Olympics, Four Continents Figure Skating Championships, the World Championships and looks forward to qualifying for the 2018 Winter Olympics.
This unique lady has been featured in Nike‘s 2017 short inspirational film tagged, “What will they say about you?”.
Nike also involved her and other incredible female athletes in its first Pro hijab campaign.
Lari is a reminder that Muslim women can and are doing amazing things in their different fields.
