Satanic Temple supports abortion, demand for law to be 'less restrictive'
Satanists are challenging the abortion law that requires a compulsory waiting period of 72 hours.
Currently, the law imposed by Missouri in the United States requires women to wait for three days and read a pro-life pamphlet before abortions can be done.
The fact that pamphlet says that life “begins at conception" is a major bone of contention.
Satanists say these laws are unnecessary and go against their religious beliefs, which is why one woman is suing the state, The World Religion News reports.
The lawsuit was filed on February 28, 2018, by an unnamed Missouri resident after she tried to get an abortion.
Her lawyer, James McNaughton, said: “It is a bedrock principle of our culture (and) of our country that we choose for ourselves what to believe by way of religious beliefs. It’s not the business of government to tell us that.”
In his statement, the Temple’s spokesperson, Lucien Greaves said: “With a bald theocratic imposition of abortion restrictions into Missouri state law, and a continued expansion of religious privilege and exemption, Missouri lawmakers are going to be forced to accept that there are religious perspectives, just as deeply-held, that may directly contradict their own religious beliefs and directives.”
The case was first heard on Jan. 23. No ruling has been made yet.
The Satanic Temple
Despite the name, this religious group does not believe in Satan. For them, this particular name is just a metaphor used for rebellion.
They described themselves as “an association of politically aware Satanists, secularists, and advocates for individual liberty.”
