We really need to stop taking everyday miracles for granted

We are so busy chasing earth shattering miracles that we forget to thank God for the following ones.

Miracles are happening everyday

In the midst of life's noise, it can become easy to disregard the simple, everyday miracles, and we turn our gaze to the earth shattering ones.

We become people who are only convinced that God exists when something mind blowing happens.

When we reach this state of mind, we make ourselves target for pastors who capitalise on our longing for the extraordinary and do unspeakable things.

Today, we are making things really 'simple' and taking the focus back to the miracles we overlook, to everyday occurrences we have accepted as the norm rather than the extraordinary gifts that they are.

Here are some everyday miracles we really need to stop taking for granted.

1. The ability to wake up: Everyday, we go to bed, taking it for granted that we will wake the next day. Ever wondered what happens during the night? Ever given thought to the spiritual warfare that may have taken place in order for you to open your eyes in the morning? What about people who go to bed just like you did? You have the same amount of fingers, toes that they had, there is nothing really special that distinguishes you from them, yet you woke up and they did not. That right there is a miracle that deserves to be acknowledged and celebrated.

2. The gift of good health: Now, you awake and all your organs, body parts, everything is working? What???? This is another miracle we tend to overlook. Someone else woke up but could not move their hand, legs, but you woke up and just casually got out of bed with no regard for how spectacular it is to be able to do that. Good health is a gift that should never be taken for granted. (Psalm 77:14)

3. The roof over our heads: You have a roof over your head. Yes it's not as big as you would like, it's probably not as nice as you would prefer but it does not change the fact is that you do have a roof. There are people that are living on bridges, and in worse conditions, yet we can not recognise how magical it is that we do have a place to stay. How sad is that?

4. Having food to eat: How many times have you left the house wondering what you will eat and how you will survive through the day? Then, you get to work and someone just offers you food, or offers to buy some food for you or someone else calls out of the blue with the offer of a lunch date? What other word but miracle captures the essence of this occurrence? For me, this is absolutely a miracle. Try thinking of how many times, this happens and your head might just explode. (Matthew 6:25-34)

5. Going out and coming back without a single scratch: This morning, I got out of bed and left for work as usual. On my way, I saw a lot of blood on the road from an accident that probably left someone or people injured or worse, dead. This accident could have happened to me, yet it did not. The people involved left their homes the same I did, said, 'see you later' to their loved ones and now, they may never see them again. We all go out, witness terrible accidents, yet God allows us to return home without a single scratch. How is this not a miracle?

Others include having a job in this recession, while others are getting fired, having friends and family that love you, and the birth of a child.

The truth is that the list is endless. There are so many everyday occurrences that we simply take for granted, but if we really think about them, we would be amazed at how many extraordinary things we could find within these moments.

In the words of Joyce Meyer, "I am challenging you to stop just looking at what God is not doing. Stop looking at what you don't have and the breakthroughs that aren't comin. Go back and look at what God has done in your life."

Let us learn to see the extraordinary within the ordinary things and more importantly, remember to thank God for them.
