Sultan of Sokoto tells Muslims to look out for new moon

Muslims have been asked to start looking for the new moon of Rajab.

The monarch, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, made the request in a statement signed by Prof Sambo Junaidu, the Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs to the Sultanate Council.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the statement was released on Friday, March 16, 2018.

It read: “This is to inform the Muslim Ummah that Saturday, March 17, this year, which is equivalent to 29 days of Jimada Assaniya 1439AH, shall be the day to look for the new moon of Rajab 1439AH.

“Muslims are, therefore, requested to start looking out for the new moon of Rajab 1439AH on Saturday (today) and report its sighting to the nearest district or village head for onward communication to the Sultan.”

The sultan also called on the Muslims to pray for peace, unity, and growth in Nigeria.

Ramadan

The Holy Month may start on May 17, 2018. This is based on findings from the Sharjah Center for Astronomy & Space Sciences.

“The new moon of the Holy Month of Ramadan is to be ‘born’ on Tuesday, May 13 around 3.48 pm UAE time, and disappears two minutes before sunset of the same evening,” Ibrahim Al Jarwan, the deputy director general said.

Meanwhile, the new moon of the lunar month of Shawwal which follows Ramadan is likely to appear on Wednesday, June 13, 2018.
