5 Biblical characters that came back from the dead
We take a look at the people who were raised from the dead in the Bible.
Lazarus
The story of Lazarus is one of the most popular ones in the Bible. He was a close friend of Jesus Christ.
Sadly, Lazarus of Bethany died two days after Jesus was told about his illness. He was later resurrected after being dead for four days. Lazarus came out of his tomb, wrapped in burial cloths but very alive. See John 11:1–44.
Widow’s son
In Kings, we find the prophet Elijah lodging in a widow’s home in Zarephath, a pagan city. During his stay, the woman’s son became sick and eventually died.
Faced with the mother’s questions, Prophet Elijah took the boy to his room, stretched himself out on the dead body three times as he begged God to return the boy’s life. His prayers were heard, answered and the boy came back to life. See 1 Kings 17:17–24.
Eutychus
A young man named Eutychus dozed off while listening to Apostle Paul. He was sitting on a windowsill on the third story which was why he died as soon as he fell.
The apostle reacted by rushing out and lying on the dead body, just like Prophet Elijah did to the widow’s son. Immediately, Eutychus came back to life and was taken home. See Acts 20:7–12.
Jairus’ daughter
Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, had a dying 12-year-old daughter in Capernaum. This caused him to find and beg Jesus to heal his child.
Sadly, she died but Jesus followed him home, went in, touched her hand and said, “My child, get up.” The Bible says her spirit returned and she came back to life. See Luke 8:49–56.
Jesus Christ
The Son of God was killed to save humanity. After his death on the cross, his lifeless body was put in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea and guarded by soldiers.
Three days later, he resurrected, appeared first to Mary Magdalene, then to his apostles, and others.
See Matthew 28:1–20; Mark 16:1–20; Luke 24:1–49; and John 20:1–21:25.
