The Aso Ebi phenomenon

The recession is hitting hard at all levels in the country, at the moment, but the aso-ebi phenomenon thrives on.

The Aso Ebi phenomenon

Aso-ebi ( literally translated as the cloth of the family) is aptly described in Wikipedia as a uniform dress traditionally worn mostly in Nigeria, as an indicator of cooperation and solidarity during ceremonies and festive periods.

The asoebi phenomenon, not only portrays a sense of unity of the wearers to the world, it also works on the psychology of the wearers and gives them a “ sense of belonging “.

Asoebi identifies the group of the wearers, particularly in an occasion where two families are represented e.g. at a wedding ceremony.

In my opinion, the family of the celebrant, also experience a sense of satisfaction from the number of people that choose to identify with them by wearing the aso-ebi.

It will be unfair not to mention those who are aware of the treatment afforded wearers of asoebi , will buy so that they can be given preferential treatment during the event.

It is appalling how some people have turned what was seemingly a way of culture, identity, and unity, into a money making venture.

So a woman is marrying off her daughter, goes to the market to price the aso-ebi of her choice; if it is sold 15000 per 5 yards. She can sell it for 30000 and make 1,000,000 from the venture.

Do close family members and friends even have a choice on the matter? I think not. They will rather beg, borrow or steal than show up without the aso-ebi at the occasion.

Considering the state of the economy, what is your take on aso-ebi ; to do or not to do?
