Rita Dominic Actress joins Gender Equality Bill protest

Nollywood actress, Rita Dominic, lends her support for the Gender Equality Bill, by joining her female compatriots in a peaceful protest.

This was held on March 23, 2016, in Ikeja, Lagos.

Information was passed around on Facebook for people who are interested in joining the protest in order to speak out against the rejection of the bill by the Nigeria Senate.

Surprisingly, Dominic showed up at the rally, holding up a fist of black power with other women, young and old.

The event was put together by Laila Saint Matthews, the leader of the advocacy group, 'Acts Generation', an organisation that offers support to victims of domestic violence.

The short-lived Gender Equality Bill has been a subject of widespread protest in the country, especially among women's rights group, who are particularly affected.

Top actress, Stella Damasus, is one of the celebrities that have voiced out their reservation for the rejection of the bill.

In an Instagram post, she charged every women in the country to join the campaign meant to create awareness that would condemn the action of the Nigeria Senate for not passing the bill.

She said, "This is totally unacceptable and if every African woman cannot rise up to fight for their rights and the rights of their daughters, then why should anyone listen or care?"

"I am tired of seeing the same people fight for the rights of women and children, risking their lives everyday while others act like they don’t care."

The passing of the Gender Equality Bill would have solved many of the social challenges faced by women in the country.

Many developed countries, especially in Europe have a law that protects women from being socially victimized or discriminated against.
