Sometimes the negative publicity may not necessarily be your fault, what matters is how you choose to handle the situation.

Tiwa Savage cries during interview on Teebillz.

As a celebrity, there will always be good and bad publicity about your brand. Sometimes the negative publicity may not necessarily be your fault, what matters is how you choose to handle the situation and clear up whatever tarnished image the negative attention might have cause.

Pulse Nigeria offers six ways in which any celebrity can manage crisis and bad publicity.

1. Keep silent

When footage emerged of Solange Knowles attacking her brother-in-law Jay Z as his wife Beyonce looked on in an elevator in 2014, neither party came out to tell anyone what exactly happened. Rather rumours that Jay Z cheated or was flirting with another lady leading to Solange’s outburst has been sparked by so called sources. Till date we don’t know what exactly happened.

2. Say something

In a situation where keeping silent doesn’t help your situation, you can speak up to clear whatever misconceptions there are about the situation. For instance, Tiwa Savage, opened up to share her side of the story and clear her name and the names of her colleagues her husband accused her of having sexual relations with.

3. Hire a PR manager

If it’s something you don’t think you can handle, call in the professionals. Your PR manager should understand your brand and personality. Let him or her handle all media enquires.

4.Find an opportunity in all this

You can use the situation to spark your creativity and even make some money. On the remix of ‘Flawless’, Beyonce referred to the elevator incident in her lyrics: “Of course sometimes shit goes down when there’s a billion dollars on an elevator.”

5. Keep calm

Don’t take things personal. Whatever happens, do not lose your cool. Remember in 2011 when Chris Brown got angry, smashed a window with a chair and tore his shirt after the host of Good Morning America, Robin Roberts asked him about Rihanna? This led the public to speculate and suggest that the singer had anger issues.

6. Leave social media alone

Thanks to the evolution of technology and the advancement of the digital era, fans can communicate with their idols directly and dish out their two cents and critic everything they do in the public space. Truth is social media can be a hurtful space filled with negative people. Avoid responding to critics or reading any mentions on social media.
