Are Nigerian DJs Doing Enough?

“There’s still a lot of work to be done, but it seems like we’re just used to or satisfied with this temporary success while we should be taking it to the next level” says Osagie the Pulse Editor-in-chief.

On the latest episode of “Facts Only”which debuts today, June 21, 2016, the Pulse Nigeria Editor-in-chief explores the profession of the disc jockey.

Back in the days, being in music was tough, if a person came out to say he was an artiste, he was seen as a misfit/no-good talkless of coming to say he was a DJ. However, the industry has since evolved, artistes are seen as demi-gods and the DJ as a gatekeepers of music. DJs such as DJ Jimmy Jatt, and DJ Xclusiv have successfully established themselves as both DJs and artistes.

The question being asked on the new episode of “Facts Only” is “Are Nigerian DJs doing enough to push the music culture in Nigeria?”

“Looking at DJs in Nigeria, nowadays, you have to give them props for actually doing a lot of work”, Alonge said.

“But there’s still a lot of work to be done, but it seems like we’re just used or satisfied with this temporary success while we should be taking it to the next level”.

With the growth of the industry, Alonge argues there are still some who are not doing enough.

The pop culture enthusiast looks at DJ Jimmy Jatt as a case study in explaining this situation.

“Everything Jimmy Jatt has done, it seems like every other artist wants to be the next Jimmy Jatt and the route and method at which they are going at it is wrong”.

For Alonge, it seems as though the DJs are too busy trying to be recording artistes than breaking new songs and artistes.
