Depression is real

Depression is defined as feelings of severe despondency and dejection.

Depression

It's no surprise that based on surveys carried in the united Kingdom, the guardian newspapers stated that one out of every five adults in the UK have been depressed at one point or the other.

Depression is defined as feelings of severe despondency and dejection. The Cambridge English dictionary’s definition appears to hit the nail accurately. It states that depression is a state of feeling very unhappy and without hope for the future. Those that have had battles with depression can tell you that depression is NOT about feeling down. Scientists have long concluded that it is a brain disorder.

It is an issue of concern in the mental health. It involves chemical imbalances in the brain, and this can only be detected and treated by competent psychiatrists.

According to the World Health Organization, depression affects one in every five women and every ten men at one point in time or another, in their lifetime. It cuts across status, gender and age.

What causes depression? There is no conclusion reached till date about the exact cause of depression, however, there are a number of factors that initiate or aggravate it.

Depression can be caused by intrinsic factors, like genetic characteristics, changes in hormonal levels (this is particularly seen with the female, whose body has to conform to balances in the hormones that express its “femaleness “).

Extrinsic factors like substance abuse, stress, and grief, contribute towards depression.

The feeling of hopelessness that accompanies depression is one of the emotions that can encourage suicidal thoughts.

Often than none, when someone that is suffering from depression has no one to talk with, things can become very dangerous.

Recently a medical doctor ordered his driver to park the car on third Mainland Bridge and jumped over.

What is shocking I believe is the fact that he was coming from church. We need to be more attentive and show more care for people, sitting next to us , in church, in the bus, at events … We need to be more “conscious” of our consciousness and conscience . We need to be more intuitive. There are people out there that have lost hope in life and living.

Some guy on social media wrote that the situation in the country is the reason for Dr. Orji’s suicide. I think it is very sad that we can be intelligent and foolish in our expressions. Are we having the same economic challenges as the United Kingdom is? How come they have the statistics to show that one in every five adult in the UK has suffered from depression at one time or the other? The same UK that most Nigerians think they need to get to so that “all of their problems can be solved “.

Could someone be suffering from depression? How do you know if you are suffering from depression? If we do not know the symptoms of depression , then we cannot know if and when we suffer from it.
