Rock legend Tom Petty dead at age 66

Singer-songwriter Tom Petty has died at 66, according to a family statement. He was hospitalized Sunday night after being found in full cardiac arrest.

Rock legend Tom Petty has died, the musician's family announced in a statement on Monday night. He was 66.

"On behalf of the Tom Petty family we are devastated to announce the untimely death of of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty," the statement read.

"He suffered a cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. He died peacefully at 8:40 pm PT surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends."

For much of Monday, there was confusion in the media as to whether the singer-songwriter had passed away.
