Nintendo and Niantic Labs, the developer behind the game, announced last month that legendary pokémon would soon make their way to players, which means that Mewtwo is likely part of a first batch, with many others to come.

As of right now, the special creature is only available to players in Japan, however, but;the character will become available to players worldwide "in the coming weeks," according to a blog post issued earlier today.

The legendary pokémon will be the first players will be able to battle and catch through a so-called "Exclusive Raid Battle," similar to existing Raid Battles, save for a few differences.

For one, players need to be personally invited to attend Exlusive Raid Battles. "To receive an invitation to participate in an Exclusive Raid Battle," the post reads, "Trainers must have successfully completed a raid recently, by defeating the Raid Boss, at the Gym where the Exclusive Raid Battle will be taking place."

"The invitations will include advance warning of when the Exclusive Raid will take place, giving them ample time to coordinate with other Trainers before taking on the powerful Raid Boss."

Last week, Kotaku reports, a "shiny" (differently coloured) Pikachu made its first appearance in Yokohama, following a series of less successful events in Chicago last July.

Here are some tweets of the lucky players who managed to capture Mewtwo:
