Here's when facial recognition will be standard on smartphones
As biometric identification becomes more ubiquitous in smartphones, more than 1 billion smartphones will feature facial recognition in the next two years.
Aside from its hands-free capabilities, 3D sensing presents smartphone vendors with several opportunities not offered by fingerprint scanning:
- No additional hardware is required.
- While fingerprint scanning requires new technology built into the handset, some face-scanning tech (not including Apple’s Face ID) can leverage the existing smartphone camera to verify a user’s identity. This could potentially enable vendors to roll out the tech to existing smartphones rather than waiting to build it into the next flagship smartphone version.
- An added level of personalization.
- Face ID could
- how users’ expressions change during certain parts of advertisements, which can provide insight into whether ads are eliciting the emotions and engagement they are intended to, and to provide more personalized and targeted ads or content.
- Accelerates the deployment of AR.
- AR leverages machine-learning tech, such as computer vision and object recognition, to attach stickers and 3D renderings to the real-world environment. 3D sensing is a big part of the technology used to develop AR apps and experiences. And as
- for AR experiences grows, it makes sense that vendors would want to explore technology that will facilitate its development and deployment.
