A new 'Mega Man' game is being made for the first time in nearly 10 years — and it looks rad

For the first time since 2010, a new "Mega Man" game is planned for launch in 2018. It's called "Mega Man 11," and it looks rad!

Gaming classic "Mega Man" is getting its next major entry in 2018. The game is "Mega Man 11," and it looks rad.

"Mega Man 11" is scheduled to arrive in "late 2018" on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Alongside some pretty images, a brand new trailer offers a lot of clues of what to expect in the next major "Mega Man" game.

Here's what we spotted!

The last major "Mega Man" game came out in 2010 — it was called "Mega Man 10," and it looked more like classic 8-bit games than the new game.

"Mega Man 11" evolves that visual style dramatically.

The game's maker, Japanese game company Capcom, calls it a "2.5D" art style — mixing classic two-dimensional gameplay with 3D artwork.

A good example of what Capcom is talking about can be seen above where the ladder is — it's seemingly set back into the screen. The enemy next to the ladder, hiding under his construction helmet, is another good example.

It's a subtle difference, but it makes the levels look far more rich than they already did in previous games.

Otherwise, "Mega Man 11" appears to retain many of the "Mega Man" staples.

Longtime "Mega Man" fans may've already spotted a mess of series callbacks, from Rush the robot dog to enemy Mets (the guys in construction hats).

But, as you can see above from the guy with the pickaxe, even the lowly Met has evolved into a new character. The same can be said for the art style of energy/ammo pick-ups, as you can see behind the Met above (on the crate).

Boss fights are of course returning — only one was shown thus far, featuring this Met operating a backhoe.

Is this a miniboss? Is this a full on end-level boss? That's not clear! My guess is it's a miniboss, given the door on the right side — but I could be wrong!

Either way, this boss fight looks like so many before it. Memorization is key, as are quick reactions. The art style really stands out here, blending a shinier, softer version of "Mega Man" with an almost cel-shaded look (think: comic books).

It looks like Mega Man's slide is returning here as well — something that first showed up in "Mega Man 3," but was missing from the last two games.

"Mega Man 11" is seemingly cherry picking elements from the entire series. Though the slide was missing from the last two main series "Mega Man" games, it's apparently returning in "Mega Man 11."

Similarly, a charged shot is seemingly part of Mega Man's standard arsenal.

The charged shot was first introduced in "Mega Man 4" — like the slide, it was absent in the last two "Mega Man" games. It's repeatedly used in the game's first trailer, both to destroy enemies and to break apart pieces of the level itself.

For instance, everything in this image that looks cracked is destructible with a charged shot:

It wouldn't be "Mega Man" without being able to use different powers retrieved from boss fights. Here's one such power from "Mega Man 11":

In this instance, Mega Man's power is being able to summon blocks from the sky. As they fall down, they knock out enemies and break stuff in Mega Man's way. It looks pretty sweet in action, like Mega Man's some kinda crazy wizard.

One last thing: Check out this super fresh E container!

And yes — that is Rush making another appearance, this time as a springboard for Mega Man to reach high up areas. Thanks Rush!

"Mega Man 11" is coming to Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC in "late 2018." Check out the game in action right here:
