Melania Trump wore a coat that costs more than most Americans earn in a year

Melania Trump wore a $51,500 Dolce & Gabbana jacket for a meeting of first spouses at the annual G-7 summit.

Capes have fallen out of fashion since the early '90s, with Sozzani writing they're bound to have a comeback sooner or later. Now, it looks like Trump may be helping fuel that return.

Melania Trump wore a $51,500 Dolce & Gabbana jacket to a meeting with the spouses of some of the most powerful world leaders at the annual G-7 summit in Catania, Italy, this week.

The coat, which is no longer available to preorder online, requires a $25,750 deposit.

Making $51,500 annually would put you in the 65th percentile of individual-earning Americans, according to 2016 US Census Bureau data analyzed by the personal-finance site DQYDJ. The median household income in the US is $53,889.

Here's a screenshot of the coat on Moda Operandi's website, where it was previously sold but no longer is available. It is a part of Dolce & Gabbana's Fall/Winter 2017 line and is expected to ship starting in July.

Dolce & Gabbana has faced a backlash for continuing to dress the first lady. But the Italian designers have been unmoved by criticism.

On Friday, Stefano Gabbana posted a video and several pictures of Melania Trump in the jacket on Instagram, captioning the video with a "THANK YOU" and several heart emojis.
