  • J.C. Penney is closing eight stores in states from New Jersey to California.
  • The retailer also revealed this week that it was closing a distribution center that fulfills online orders, which will result in 670 job cuts.

J.C. Penney is closing eight stores and firing 470 employees, CNBC reports.

The closings span eight states from New Jersey to California. The stores will permanently close around May 12, J.C. Penney spokesman Joseph Thomas told Business Insider.

"Taking actions that directly impact our valued associates and loyal customers is always difficult," Thomas said. "We will go to great lengths to relocate esteemed leaders and, if possible, assist associates in identifying other job opportunities at nearby J.C. Penney stores."

Here are the cities where stores will close:

  • St. Louis
  • Paramus, New Jersey
  • Galesburg, Illinois
  • Alexandria, Minnesota
  • Bartlesville, Oklahoma
  • Burlington, Washington
  • Calexico, California
  • Mt. Vernon, Ohio

J.C. Penney also revealed this week that it was closing a distribution center in Wisconsin that fulfills online orders. About 670 workers will lose their jobs as a result of the closing.
