Roy Halladay has been identified as the person killed in the crash.

The former MLB pitcher Roy Halladay died on Tuesday when his plane crashed in the Gulf of Mexico.
Halladay was piloting the plane and had recently posted several photos on social media of it.

The former Major League Baseball pitcher Roy Halladay died on Tuesday when a plane he was piloting crashed into the Gulf of Mexico. He was 40.

The local sheriff confirmed Halladay's death, according to several reports.

Halladay, who played 16 seasons in the MLB with the Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies, was an eight-time All-Star and twice won the Cy Young Award. He pitched the 20th perfect game in MLB history during the 2010 season and threw a no-hitter in the playoffs against the Cincinnati Reds later that year.

Noah Pransky, a reporter for WTSP, a local Tampa station, said the Icon A5 plane was registered in Halladay's name on Monday.

Halladay had recently posted several photos of his plane on social media, and he appeared to be an avid pilot.

Halladay also recently wrote about flying the A5 "low over the water" and compared it to flying a fighter jet.
