This would not be the first time in the NFL that a pass hit something hanging above the field.
Wires can be seen in footage of the pass, but it's unclear whether they're part of the Skycam.

A pass during "Monday Night Football" may have hit something hanging above the field and caused an incompletion — and nobody on the field seemed to notice.

The latest incident came in the second quarter of the game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Pittsburgh Steelers when Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton tried to hit wide receiver A.J. Green deep down the left sideline but came woefully short.

Was this just one of the worst passes of Dalton's career, or did something cause it to start spinning like a helicopter midflight?

Many people on social media immediately started wondering whether the pass had hit a Skycam wire.

This would not be the first time that happened — a Derek Carr pass last season appeared to hit the Skycam or wires supporting the camera that provides views from above the field.

Here's the pass slowed down — the ball appears to come out of Dalton's hand normally but start tumbling around the Bengals' 47-yard line, just as it passes in front of the wall separating the Steelers players and the fans.

There is still nothing conclusive in the video. And in this case, it didn't affect the outcome of the play, as a facemask foul was called on the Bengals.

But it raises questions about how wires might affect plays in other circumstances.

Here's a photo from behind the Bengals' offense immediately after the play. You can see wires above the field — it's impossible to tell how close or far they are, but the one on the left is at least in the direction of the pass.

That view is from the Skycam, however, so it's unclear whether those wires are part of it.
