The Presidency to sign 2017 budget next week
Nigeria's economy slided into recession in Q2 2016, the first in the last 25 years, while the delayed 2017 budget is structured to pull it out of the bad economic situation.
According to Reuters, two other presidency sources also confirmed this information stating that the N7.44 trillion budget passed by parliament on May 11, 2017, would be assented to by the Executive arm of government.
Mr Dogara stated this during an event marking the second anniversary of the 8th National Assembly that "On the issue of Budget, we kept our promise to Nigerians at the beginning of the legislative session to ensure transparent deliberation and passage of the 2017 Appropriations Bill which will be signed into law early next week.”
It would be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari proceeded on Medical leave on May 7 while the budget was passed on May 11, 2017. This, thus, created a constitutional issue of the appropriateness of the Acting President signing the budget.
Information from government official also disclosed that there is an ongoing discussion between the executive and legislative over the proposed spending plan for the year.
