Senior Kenyan electoral commissioner resigns and flees to US barely 7 days to elections
Akombe stated that she won’t be part of the mockery.
Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commissioner, Roselyne Akombe resigned from the electoral body reducing the number of commissioners to six.
Unconfirmed reports also reveal that she has fled to United States.
Akombe stated that she won’t be part of the "mockery".
Media reports indicate she had gone to Dubai to supervise the printing of ballot papers but then diverted her flight to New York where she announced her resignation.
It is yet unclear how her resignation will affect the fresh elections scheduled for October 26.
Akombe's resignation comes barely months after she was barred from traveling to the United States after she was dramatically ejected from a US board flight and her luggage offloaded just days days after Kenya's Presidential elections were declared.
Her brother also fled the country for US last month after receiving numerous threat messages which he divulged was targeted at his sister and other commissioners.
“He left the country last week when the threats became too much,” Akombe was quoted by a local daily at the time.
Here is her statement on why she resigned.
