Trump's allies are using a common talking point to push back on the bombshell Flynn guilty plea

Conservatives pushed back at the severity of Michael Flynn's guilty plea as a part of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe.

  • Allies of President Donald Trump pushed back on the presumed severity of Michael Flynn's guilty plea.
  • They said it had nothing to do with any collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian officials.

Allies of President Donald Trump pushed back on Friday at the severity of former national security adviser Michael Flynn's guilty plea as a part of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe, saying it did not entail collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian officials last year.

Flynn pleaded guilty in federal court to making false statements to the FBI about his discussions last December with former Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Flynn was also under intense scrutiny from investigators for his work

Conservatives and Trump's supporters, though, suggested the plea arrangement was not a sign of impending doom for the administration.

"This is about [Flynn] lying about conversations while overseas with a Russian official, but it has nothing to do with this charge of inappropriate collusion with the Russian government on the elections," Matt Schlapp, chair of the American Conservative Union, told Fox News. (Schlapp's wife Mercedes serves in the administration.)

Right-wing internet personality Mike Cernovich called the charge against Flynn "chicken s---," and added that there was still "zero evidence of collusion."

"So this is what Mueller does," he tweeted.

Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, during a Fox News interview, drew a connection between Flynn's guilty plea, Democrats, and the 2010 Uranium One deal that has dominated conservative media in recent weeks.

"What it tells me is that special prosecutors and special counsels are going to go about, as they always do, pulling back the layers of the onion, seeing what they can find there," she said. "We know that the Russia investigation is something that is going to have tentacles that probably will end up reaching some of the Democrats."

"Again you look at what has happened with the Clinton Foundation and Uranium One," she continued. "This is an area that people are wanting to get some answers to, to find out exactly what happened there."

But at least one frequent Fox News personality seemed to signal a point with which many in the legal community agreed in the aftermath of the Flynn bombshell — it was terrible for Trump.

"This is probably the tip of a prosecutorial iceberg," Fox News legal analyst Andrew Napolitano said. "This is a nightmare for Donald Trump."
