Some Corbyn supporters are burning copies of the Daily Mail and The Sun on election day

The leftwingers are protesting the newspapers' anti-Corbyn headlines — and giving them more money in the process.

LONDON — There is little question as to which party The Sun and the Daily Mail support in today's general election.

On Thursday, The Sun's front page headline was "Don't Chuck Britain In The Cor-Bin," urging its readers: "We have had enough of Jezza's rubbish ... Vote Tory."

The Daily Mail, meanwhile, went for "Let's Reignite British Spirit," repeating Theresa May's warning that "Corbyn will tax your work, your garden, your home and your inheritance."

In response, some Corbyn supporters have been buying up copies of the papers and binning or even burning them — provoking a heated debate over potential censorship.

Author John Niven wrote on Twitter that "this morning I reignited the British spirit with the newsagents entire stock of Suns and Daily Mails," alongside a video of the newspapers on fire.

Some of his followers have joined in, buying up newsagents' and supermarkets' entire supplies of the papers in order to destroy them.

Baker and columnist Ruby Tandoh also tweeted that she "recycled" all the copies at her local store.

But others have responded with concern to the protest. Jane Merrick, co-editor of The Spoon, wrote on Twitter:

"The arrogance of saying to people 'I know what's good for you so I'm going to block you reading newspapers I don't like' is breathtaking. Say 'this is outrageous' 'I hate it' etc but that's *your* view. Don't patronise others by thinking they can't make up their own minds."

Commentator and radio presenter Julia Hartley-Brewer quoted Niven's tweet, writing that "there's definitely a bloke who used to live in Germany who would have approved."

Others mocked the fact that by buying the newspapers in order to bin or burn them, the protesters were actually helping to fund them.

"I'm sure Rupert Murdoch will be devastated to learn that Corbynites are burning copies of his newspapers *after buying them*," Conservative Home editor Mark Wallace tweeted sarcastically.

It is an argument that is not lost on some of the protesters. "Yes i KNOW papers get £ when I buy them jesus. my priority is making sure any undecided voters aren't swayed by lies on this vital day," Tandoh tweeted.
