Mobil expresses interest in Nigeria’s power sector

Expression of intention to participate in Nigeria's power sector by major IOCs indicates possible end to gas flaring and optimisation of the country's gas potentials.

The Nigerian power sector received another cheering news as ExxonMobil, a leading global oil and gas giant, expresses interest to participate in the country’s power sector.

In a statement by officials of the Nigeria’s Ministry of Petroleum Resources on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, ExxonMobil has accepted the partnership with Nigerian and ready to work with the Federal government to ensure development and growth of the oil and gas sector.

This announcement made it the second international oil company to have declare its intention in Nigeria’s power sector this year.

ExxonMobil is currently building a power plant in Qua Iboe in Akwa Ibom State. Also in January 2017, Eni signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to build a power plant in the country, as well as refurbish the Port Harcourt refinery in Rivers State.

Other ongoing power projects currently under construction in Nigeria and sponsored by international oil company currently include Chevron’s Agura Power Plant, Total’s Obite Power Plant, Shell’s Afam VI Power Plant in Rivers State and the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC)’s Okpai Power Plant in Delta State.

The ministry said ExxonMobil reiterated its commitment to help deliver power to Nigeria and support its gas commercialisation programme. The oil giant disclosed its readiness while playing host to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, according to a statement by the ministry.
