Quoting both civilian and security sources, one of his deputies was also confirmed to have been killed during the operation that was carried out on Friday, April 29, 2017.

Two Nigerian Air Force jets shelled the terrorists who had gathered for weekly Jumaat prayers in Balla village, 25 miles (40 kilometers) from Damboa, on the edge of the Sambisa Forest.

“Shekau was wounded in the bombings and is believed to be receiving treatment near the Nigerian border with Cameroon around Kolofata.”

“His deputy, Abba Mustapha, alias Malam Abba, was killed in the attack along with another key lieutenant, Abubakar Gashua, alias Abu Aisha,” the source closed to the dreaded group added.

Confirming the incident to AFP, Babakura Kolo, a member of the Civilian JTF, stated that “Shekau was injured and a number of commanders were killed.

“Among them is his deputy called Malam Abba. They suffered heavy casualties because the bombings targeted a large gathering of his followers attending Friday prayers.”

The AFP efforts to get comments from the Nigerian military proved unsuccessful.

Also, there has been no report or information from the Nigerian military as regards the development.
