FG shut down Apapa road for one year, as Dangote begins construction

The two kilometer road reconstruction project is to gulp N4.3 billion, which will be provided by Flour Mills of Nigeria (FMN) and Dangote Flour Mills (DFM) as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility.

Minister of Power, Works and Housing speaking to the Journalists during the signing of the Fashola signs N4.34 billion MoU with Dangote to rebuild Apapa Wharf Road

This information was disclosed by the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola during the official signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and handing over of the projects to the sponsors, Dangote Flour Mills (DFM) and Flour Mills of Nigeria (FMN).

The N4.34 billion road two kilometres road construction, between the Wharf Port and end of the bridge, is expected to begin on Saturday, June 24, 2017, and to be handled by AG Dangote Construction Company.

Mr Fashola explained that use of AG Dangote for the project is to give the road a better look, resolve traffic challenges on the road and commence the use of the concrete road in the country.

“We are embarking on what will be the final solution to the massive inconvenience. Businesses and residents in Apapa and its environment have had to endure for a couple of years.

“I like to acknowledge the leadership role of Dangote and Flour Mills who are operators and have also contributed to making this reality. They are doing this as a total Corporate Responsibility without asking for tax holiday or reduction,” the minister explained.

He also commented on the Tin Can Island Port Road, which is also in similar bad condition.

“We are also working on how to ensure free access to Tin Can Island.”

“From today that we are handing over the project, the road will take one year to be completed. We need the cooperation of all the stakeholders. There will be some discomfort on the way but we appeal for tolerance and perseverance. It will continue to get better, people should please ensure more to solve the challenge.”

Managing Director of FMN, Mr Paul Gbadebo used the occasion to prevail on the Federal government to consider repairing other sections of Apapa, and bad roads have greatly affected businesses in the previously boom business area of Lagos state.

“Apapa has become a very difficult place to work. With this project that the Federal Government has allowed to embark on, it will give succour to business. It has the biggest port in Nigeria and should not be taken with levity.”

Engr Joseph Makoju, a representative of DFM, reiterated that co-sponsoring the project is aimed at providing enabling business environment in the area.

“This is part of our CSR. Businesses have to engage the community where they operate. Today’s CSR has gone to a higher level where we find ourselves embarking on a major infrastructural project.”

Also at the signing ceremony was the Managing Director of Nigerian Port Authority, Ms Hadiza Bala Usman and other government functionaries.
