From the orthodox to the fast growing charismatics,the continent is undergoing a spiritual revolution. The churches have constructed some of the most stunning examples of architecture available in Africa.

Business Insider SSA picks some of the continent's beautiful places of worship:

1. Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire

Costing between almost $600 million,The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace was constructed between 1985-1989 by then Ivorian leader Houphet Boigny, a dedicated Catholic. It is said to be the world’s largest church, according to Guinness World of Records, surpassing St Peter's Basilica (Vatican), with an exterior area of 30,000 m².

2. Dutch Reformed Church (Grotekerk), Graaff-Reinet, South Africa

It is one of the most iconic landmarks in Graaff Reinet. The church was built in 1886 and is said to seat at least 1,250 faithful. It also boasts a chimney, an unusual feature for a church.

3. Basilica of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary church in Mongomo, Equatorial Guinea

This Italian style Basilica in Mongomo is the pet project of the country's long serving leader Teodoro Obiang Nguema for his hometown.

Many have questioned how the second largest building of worship in Africa is situated in a town of 7,000 people.

4. National Church of Nigeria, Abuja, Nigeria.

Also known as the National Christian Centre, the National Ecumenical Centre is one of the largest Christian centres in Abuja. The neo-gothic style church was designed by Darchiwork Group, a Nigerian architectural firm.

5. Dutch Reformed Church – Hanover, South Africa

This intriguing model of the Dutch Reformed Church is in Hanover, a small town in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The nucleus of the town is the Dutch Reformed Church.

6. Saint Antonio Catholic Church “Lemon Squeezer” – Maputo, Mozambique

This stunning piece of architecture was built in 1962 and restored in 1992. It has the shape of an inverted flower, and is popularly known as the “Lemon Squeezer”.

7. Dutch Reformed Church – Swellendam, South Africa

The Dutch Reformed Church in Swellendam is the second church on the site and dates from 1910. The white building has Cape Dutch gables, Gothic windows, Renaissance entrances, and a Baroque spire. Inside the church is a tiered amphitheater with banks of curving wood pews facing the pulpit and organ.

8. Christ Church – Windhoek, Namibia.

Christ Church, originally known as Church of Peace, was built in 1907.It was built following the wars between the Germans and the Khoikhoi, Herero, and Owambo.

9. New Church Of St. Mary Of Zion – Tigray, Ethiopia.

The iconic landmark was built by Emperor Haile Selassie in the 1950s. Although the present building is relatively new, the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion has impressively ancient roots.

10. Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), Nigeria

The church was founded by Nigerian prophet T.B. Joshua in Lagos, Nigeria and the colossal building is one to behold. The SCOAN remains controversial both in Nigeria and abroad, claiming regular occurrences of miracles.
