We went to New York City's most expensive neighborhood — home to Wall Streeters and celebrities like Taylor Swift — and saw why it's so popular

While back in the 1970s, the neighborhood attracted artists because of its many large lofts, today its relatively quiet streets entice the city's wealthiest businesspeople, as well as mega-celebrities like Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and Taylor Swift, who purchased a penthouse in the neighborhood for a reported $20 million in 2014.

Today, according to StreetEasy data, the median sale price in Tribeca is $4.525 million.

I recently strolled through the neighborhood to see why its real estate repeatedly tops the market. From its cobblestone streets to its plentiful restaurants, shopping, and parks, there seems to be very little reason to ever leave Tribeca once you've settled in.

"Tribeca" is an abbreviation for "Triangle Below Canal Street." Originally, the name referred only to a single block on Lispenard Street between Church Street and Broadway. Today, the neighborhood is understood to include the streets south of Canal down to Vesey Street, and from the West Side Highway to Broadway.

As for public transportation options, the neighborhood is serviced by the 1, 2, 3, A, C, E, N, Q, R, and W subway lines.

On the market in Tribeca right now are some of the city's most historic homes. This row of townhouses on Harrison Street was originally built in 1819 and made an official city landmark in 1966. Home 27A is currently on the market for $6.5 million.

While there are a total of seven Starbucks locations in Tribeca alone, there are also a number of other options for gourmet coffee, including this La Colombe store at the corner of Lispenard Street and Church Street.

The Roxy Hotel — formerly the Tribeca Grand — has its own movie theater and underground jazz club.

There's also, of course, the annual Tribeca Film Festival, which was cofounded by Robert De Niro in 2002. The Tribeca Film Center is located near the corner of Greenwich Street and North Moore Street, pictured here.

A number of art galleries, including Alexander and Bonin, are scattered throughout the neighborhood.

For shopping, there's J.Crew's stand-alone men's shop, called the Liquor Store, which opened in 2008. The shop was considered a radically different approach from the brand's usual retail spaces at the time.

But if fancy camping gear is more what you're looking for, you can check out Best Made Co., which sells everything from axes to clothing to fishing supplies.

The shelves at independent bookstore Mysterious Books are packed with rare and collectible crime and suspense novels.

For quality eats, there's The Odeon, which opened in 1980 and was frequented by artists including Andy Warhol. There are also a few Michelin-starred options within Tribeca, including Atera and Jungsik.

For a drink, locals head to The Bennett, which serves $15 cocktails and even provides mixology lessons for those wanting to make their own.

Tribeca is known for being family-friendly, and when the weather is good, Washington Market Park, pictured here, proves it. The park was packed with toddlers and parents and nannies watching on.

Rockefeller Park, with its views of New Jersey by the water, was also a popular spot this particular afternoon.

One easy way to pass over the West Side Highway on your way to the waterfront is to use the Tribeca Bridge ...

... which also has an entrance into Stuyvesant High School. Ranked number-one in New York City in 2015, the public high school is extremely selective.

The Borough of Manhattan Community College is also located within Tribeca.

For grocery shopping, there's a Whole Foods at the corner of Greenwich Street and Warren Street.

One of the most visually stunning parts of Tribeca is the ever-present One World Trade Center. Located at the southern base of the neighborhood, the building is rarely hidden, no matter where you are in Tribeca.
