The processes involved in proper hair maintenance are no walk in the park as every lady can attest to, and this equally applies to the care of weaves.

Weaves generally as a rule, can be used severally however the life span of a weave largely depends on how well it is maintained.

Here are a few things to avoid in order to prolong the lifespan of your weave.

  1. Excess oiling: Contrary to popular belief, you don't need to stuff the hair with too much oil or serum as this causes the hair to lose its bounce. If it's a curly weave, simple apply leave in conditioner and very little water on the hair this will have the curls bouncy again and also add life to the hair.

  2. Wearing for excessively long periods: The longer you wear your weave, the more combing you have to do which inevitably leads the hair to shed. So try not to wear a weave for more than 6 weeks at a stretch.

  3. Dyeing without conducting a strand test: Not all weaves can survive dyeing so its important you conduct a strand test to confirm before you dye the entire hair. Generally, human hair is usually chemically treated meaning its already been subjected to chemical processes making it less likely to survive another round of chemicals with dyeing. Virgin hair on the other hand is untreated and more likely to survive the strain of dyeing.

  4. Lack of conditioning: Conditioning is an essential part of natural hair care and the same goes for weaves as well. It's important that you condition your weave so that it can retain its bounce. It's also important to note that the texture of a weave determines the type of care. Not all weaves are the same, as such they can't all be treated the same way.

  5. Sleeping without a silk scarf: Before you go to bed, tie your hair with a silk scarf rather than a hair net. This will help prevent the hair from breaking and also help retain the curls of the weave.
